Abstract | The foregoing difficulties and others are solved by the method of the present invention, which employs a fluidized bed calciner to simplify the conversion of the liquid radioactive waste to a solidified glassy form. The invention comprises, in brief, the proportional addition of a glass frit or a similar material, directly to a fluidized bed, in which it is coated, or intimately mixed, with calcined radioactive material. The coated materials are of such a nature that they can be drained and decanted from the bed directly to a melting furnace, for conversion into glass that fixes the radioactive calcined residue.
