Abstract 1,106,788. Practice projectiles. DYNAMIT NOBEL A.G. 15 April, 1965 [23 April, 1964], No. 16418/65. Heading F3A. A practice projectile 1 intended to disintegrate on leaving the gun barrel comprises a cylindrical casing 3 and an ogival nose 2 made of thermoplastic synthetic material, the interior of the nose being reinforced by longitudinally extending ribs 4. Weakened zones 5 are provided between the ribs. The part 3 may be fluted internally. It is stated that the ribs 4 transmit the angular velocity of the projectile to the filling and hence increase the internal pressure tending to split the casing. In a modification, the reinforcing ribs stop short of the casing portion 3 and the casing wall is locally reduced in thickness to form an annular shoulder against which a plate is inserted. This plate is used to reduce the propellant thrust on the filling in the nose 2. The nose 2 may have a lining provided with reinforcing ribs. The lining may be stuck to the nose or the contacting surfaces may be roughened. Additional ribs may be provided on the exterior of the nose.
