Summary:The partitioning material in a gas chromatography column has a dimension greater than 1/5 of the inner diameter e.g. 1 mm. or less, of the column. The total solid volume of the particles may be less than 55% of the inner volume of the tube and the particles may be coated with a partitioning liquid whilst the particles themselves may act as the sorbing material. The particles may be packed in the column to form alternate zones of packed and unpacked column by loosely packing a tubular column having an inner diameter in excess of the inner diameter of the ultimate column, with granular partitioning material and drawing the column down to the desired size. The particles for packing such a column may have a diameter greater than 1/5 of the diameter of the ultimate column. A rod may be placed in the tube before packing and withdrawn prior to the reduction in size thereof thus causing the alternate packed and unpacked zones to be formed. The partitioning material may be Al2O3, whilst the tube may be made of glass, metal e.g. Cu, Al or stainless steel, or plastic. In the drawing out of glass columns, partitioning particles may be imbedded in the walls of the column. Suitable carrier gases are Ar, N2, CO2, H2 or air. In a specific embodiment a mixture of CH4, C2H6, C2H4, C3H8, C3H6, iC4H10 and nC4H10 are completely separated 90 DEG C. using H2 at 2 atm. as the carrier gas on a column of 2M length, ,25 mm. internal diameter, packed with particles ranging from 1/3 -\ba1/2 diameter of the column.
