Abstract 454,021. Selectors. WATANABE, Y., 7, 4-Chome, Kinukake-cho Suma-Ku, Kobe, Japan. March 25, 1935, No. 9280. Convention date, June 20, 1934. [Class 40 (i)] The selector described in Specification 436,343 in which a received Morse-code signal is registered by the displacement of contact-controlling rollers along the bars of a rotary squirrel-cage construction, the reception of certain predetermined signals causing the operation of characteristic alarms, is modified by providing each bar with two rollers, the position of one of which indicates whether a particular received impulse was a dot or a dash, while that of the other indicates whether or not it was preceded by a space. By this means it is made unnecessary to advance the squirrel-cage for spaces and the diameter of the cage necessary for registering any given signal is thus reduced. Construction. The rollers, which control contact springs 51 &c. on a fixed frame, are brought by guides 11, Fig. 3, into their normal tracks before they reach the displacing mechanism which comprises star-wheels 13, 13 driven step-by-step by " dash " and " space " magnets respectively. Dots cause the advance of the squirrel-cage without the displacement of a roller. Circuit arrangements, Fig. 11. In the absence of signals, C3, C4 and the space magnet F are energized. When a marking signal arrives, C1 energizes the driving magnet D of the squirrelcage and, if the signal has a sufficient duration, C2 operates and energizes the " dash " magnet E which energizes G. G locks up until a new signal arrives, whereupon H releases it. The contacts of G thus register the last signal received and are used instead of fixed roller controlled contacts in one of the roller-displacing positions of the frame since such contacts would be difficult to fit. The final space is similarly registered by the springs t8 on the space magnet F.
