Abstract Provided are a network device for encoding automatic protection switching (APS) information and an operating method of the same. The operating method includes monitoring a state of a working path and, when a failure is detected on the working path, encoding network failure information for activating a protection path on an APS channel and transmitting the network failure information to another network device. The APS channel is divided into a plurality of fields. The plurality of fields includes a first field corresponding to at least one of failure state information and request state information, and the first field may be a field corresponding to protection type information.
