Abstract A device for detecting at least one analyte in a sample fluid is provided. The device 100 includes a sensor fluid 18, a plurality of aptamers disposed in the sensor fluid, one or more aptamers of the plurality of aptamers configured to bind to an analyte, an optical source 120, and an optical detector 122 configured to detect a change in at least one optical property of the aptamers, and at least one isolation element (e.g., membrane 136) retaining the aptamer in the sensor fluid. Each of the one or more aptamers includes at least one optical tag. Each of the optical tags is configured to provide a change in at least one optical property between a first state in which the aptamer is bound to the analyte and a second state in which the aptamer is not bound to the analyte, and the first state and the second state differing in the shape of the aptamer.
