Abstract The invention relates to the field of antimicrobial materials, in particular to implantable and other medical devices, exhibiting antimicrobial activity. Provided is a method for providing a substrate with an antimicrobial coating comprising providing a substrate that is coated with a polyamine-functionalized polymer, and contacting said polyamine-functionalized polymer with an aqueous salt solution comprising at least one salt having a polarizability α37 at least 4 Å3 determined at 37° C. The salt solution may comprise one or more of NaI, KI, NaBr, KBr, NaClO4, KClO4, Na2SO4, K2SO4, Na3PO4, K3PO4, Mg(NO3)2, Ca(NO3)2, (NH4)2SO4, NH4NO3, MgSO4, CaSO4, and Al(NO3)3.
