Summary:System, methods and apparatus are described that relate to aligning timing of bi-directional, multi-stream I2S audio transmitted between IC devices, and to support audio streams that are digitized using multiple sampling rates. A method includes time-division multiplexing a first stream of digitized audio data with a second stream of digitized audio data at a primary device to obtain a first multiplexed signal, transmitting the first multiplexed signal over a serial bus to a secondary device is configured to extract the first stream of digitized audio data from the first multiplexed signal and provide the first stream of digitized audio data to a first audio peripheral coupled to the secondary device, extracting the second stream of digitized audio data from the first multiplexed signal at the primary device, and providing the extracted second stream of digitized audio data to a second audio peripheral coupled to the first device
