Abstract An apparatus and method for operating a fast feedback channel in a broadband wireless communication system are provided. The method includes generating and transmitting a feedback signal through a fast feedback channel of a first mode, determining to switch a mode of the fast feedback channel from the first mode to a second mode, transmitting a signal for requesting the mode switching of the fast feedback channel through the fast feedback channel, and generating and transmitting a feedback signal through a fast feedback channel of the second mode.
