Abstract The present invention provides: a write retry method which reduces the number of permanent errors; and a magnetic tape apparatus in which the method is implemented. In a write control method of the present invention, at least one dataset is written into a space of a predetermined distance in a lengthwise direction of a tape medium. A write ERP of the present invention can reduce occurrence of permanent errors before time-out, thereby having an advantageous effect of reducing the number of unnecessary requests for exchange of tape cartridges.
