Summary: | The present invention provides peptides which are characterized by having a biological activity that increases 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 1alpha-hydroxylase activity in a cell, thereby increasing calcitriol (active vitamin D) levels. The peptides have a sequence related to the contiguous sequence defined by residues 242 to 264 in the naturally occurring matrix extracellular phosphoglycoprotein (PHEX). Methods of modulating 25-hydroxyvitamin 1alpha-hydroxylase gene expression and calcitriol levels using the subject peptides are also provided. Also provided are kits for practicing the subject methods. The subject compositions and methods find use in a variety of application, including the treatment of vitamin D-related disorders, such as Paget's Disease, rickets, osteoporosis, renal osteodystrophy, and psoriasis. |
