Summary:A printing apparatus includes a conveyance unit to convey a printing sheet in a conveyance direction, a printing unit to print on the conveyed printing sheet, a print unit, and a carriage to move in a direction crossing the conveyance direction. A detection unit detects a sheet edge of the print sheet based on output from a light receiving unit, and a control unit controls a borderless printing by the print unit that includes an extra-printing from the sheet edge to outside of the sheet. When the control unit performs the borderless printing, the control unit obtains an instruction to perform the borderless printing, and then causes the light receiving unit to obtain the output by causing the light emitting unit to emit the light, and thereafter the control unit sets an extra-printing amount by which printing extends off the sheet edge based on the obtained output.
