Summary: | Disclosed is a method for recovering butanol from a fermentation medium comprising of a) providing a fermentation medium contains at least one osmolyte (i.e glucose or sucrose) which increases butanol partition coefficient and a genetically modified microorganism that produces butanol from a fermentable carbon source, b) contacting the fermentation medium with water-immiscible organic extractants to form a two-phase mixture of an aqueous phase and a butanol-containing phase, and c) recovering the butanol from the butanol-containing phase. |
