Abstract 1513674 Modified alumina E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 16 May 1975 [20 May 1974] 20940/75 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions C3 and C2] A modified alumina is obtained by (a) reacting a tetra (hydrocarbyl) compound of a Group IVa transition metal with an anhydrous, hydrated alumina to form a material having transition metal bonded via aluminate groups to the surface of the alumina, and (b) hydrogenating the product to convert 60 to 100% of the hydrocarbyl groups to hydride and at least partially reduce the valency of the metal. The reactions are carried out in a hydrocarbon medium. Examples refer to the treatment of alumina with tetrabenzyl-, tetraneopentyl or tetraneophyl-zirconium or tetraneophyl titanium or (for comparison) zirconium borohydride followed by hydrogenation. Further comparative procedures relate to the analogous modification of titania, silica and silica/magnesia.
