Abstract Apparatus and method for measuring intraocular pressure (IOP) comprising a vibrator (13) which transmits a vibrational energy into an eyeball (12) through the eyelid (11) and measures at least one of a force or phase response in the eyeball. The measurements are taken by placing the tonometer (10) against the eyelid to induce vibration in the underlying eyeball. A force transducer (16) coupled to the vibrator measures the response of the eyeball from which a vibrational impedance of the eye is determined. Intraocular pressure is then calculated based on the vibrational impedance. In a preferred use of the apparatus, the tonometer is calibrated against a known intraocular pressure measurement permitting the patient to take subsequent relative IOP measurements at home or otherwise outside a traditional medical setting without the need for anesthetic or fear of infection. Un aparato y metodo para la medicion de la Presion Ocular Interna (IOP) comprende un vibrador (13) que transmite una energia vibracional en un globo ocular (12) a traves del parpado (11) y mide al menos una de una respuesta de fuerza o una respuesta de fase en el globo ocular. Las mediciones son tomadas al colocar el tonometro (10) contra el parpado con el fin de inducir la vibracion en el globo ocular superpuesto. Un transductor de fuerza (16), acoplado con el vibrador, mide la respuesta del globo ocular a partir de lo cual se determina una impedancia vibracional del ojo. A continuacion, la presion intraocular es calculada en base a la impedancia vibracional. En un uso preferido del aparato, el tonometro es calibrado contra una medicion conocida de presion intraocular que permite al paciente tomar mediciones subsiguientes relativas de la IOP en el hogar o de otro modo fuera de una instalacion medica tradicional sin la necesidad de anestesico o sin temor de una infeccion.
