COMPOSITION AND METHOD FOR IMMOBILIZING CELLS AND ENZYMES IN A CARRIER MATRIX

Microorganisms, enzymes, and other biocatalysts are immobilized by mixing with the reaction product of a homogeneous dispersion of an anionic polysaccharide with a cationic polymer to form a polymer- biocatalyst dispersion which is then mixed with oil to form beads. Summary:Microorganisms, enzymes, and other biocatalysts are immobilized by mixing with the reaction product of a homogeneous dispersion of an anionic polysaccharide with a cationic polymer to form a polymer- biocatalyst dispersion which is then mixed with oil to form beads. For example, a biocatalyst is mixed with an alginatepolyethyleneimine product and the resulting dispersion combined with an oil phase to form beads. The beads are suitable for continuous EtOH fermn. processes.
