Summary:Process for preparing tricyclazole (I) comprises (a) reacting 2- amino-4-methylbenzothiazole with hydrazine in the presence of ethylene glycol and HCl at 100-150 C to form 2-hydrazino- 4methylbenzothiazole; (b) adding xylene and cooling the mixt. to 10- 45 C; (c) removing the ethylene glycol and adding water; (d) allowing the mixt. to seperate and adding water; (e) adding an amt. of irreversible acid scavenger slightly in excess of the amt. to neutralize the mixt.; (f) distilling the neutralized xylene layer at 100-120 C to remove an azeotrope of water and xylene; (g) continuing to distill the mixt. to remove an azeotrope of ethylene glycol in xylene until the ethylene glycol is removed; (h) cooling the mixt. to < 100 C and adding about 10.5mol 80% HCO2H; and (i) heating the mixt. until (I) is formed.
