Summary:The degree of cooking in a sulphite digester for delignification reactions, is determined by continuously calculating the digester reaction rate as a function of sensed idgester temp. sensed digester pressure and several constants which include an energy-of-activity constant and the gas constant of the digester reaction, so that reaction rate value is obtd. over a time period. A value corresponding to partial pressure of SO2 is obtd. as a function of temp, and pressure, and is multiplied by the reaction rate value to give a delignification rate value which is integrated over time to obtain a kappa number corresponding to the degree of cooking in the digester.
