The mixed-phase oxide comprises an interpenetrating mixture of a first phase and a second phase; wherein the first phase has the crystal structure of TiNb2O7 and the second phase has the crystal structure of Zn2Nb34O87. Preferably, the weight ratio of the first phase to the second phase is 199:1 to 1:1, most preferably 50:1 to 8:1. The first phase may comprise at least 85 wt% of the mixed-phase oxide. The mixed-phase oxide is preferably particulate, optionally with a D50 particle diameter between 0.1-100 µm. The mixed-phase oxide may also include one or more additional elements, such as Zr, V, Fe, Mo, W and P to substitute for a metal, as well as at least one electronegative element such as a halide, N, S or Se to substitute for oxygen. The interpenetrating mixture is preferably not a core/shell structure, and may be coated with carbon.
