Abstract The present invention relates to an instrument for coagulating and dissecting biological tissue, to be easily and safely operated. According to the present invention, the instrument including a tool (29) comprising a coagulation electrode (36) and at least one dissection electrode (38). The electrodes (36, 38) are operated through an operation circuit (45), the operation circuit (45) includes an evaluation circuit (70), and the evaluation circuit (70) receives an evaluation signal (S) having first half-waves (S1) and second half-waves (S2) from an external device (21). The first and second half-waves (S1, S2) have opposite polarity to each other. During at least one first half-wave (S1), the evaluation circuit (70) inspects whether a first switch (32), a second switch (33), or both two switches (32, 33) are operated in the instrument device (26). In accordance with an evaluation result, a triggering signal (A) is generated and transmitted to a switching unit (53). In accordance with the triggering signal (A), the switching unit (53) is switched into a first or second switching state. In the second switching state, voltage and current suitable for dissection are not applied to the dissection electrode (38).
