Disclosed is an electronic device capable of IoT-controlling a legacy device. The electronic device comprises: an operation performing unit; a network communication unit to perform network communication with a server; an infrared communication unit; and a processor to control the operation performing unit to perform a prescribed operation, acquire information of an external device from a first infrared signal of the external device received via the infrared communication unit, transmit the acquired information of the external device to the server to request the external device to be registered as a control target, receive a control command of the external device from the server, and control the infrared communication unit to transmit a second infrared signal including command information to allow the external device to perform an operation corresponding to the received control command. Accordingly, a user can perform IoT-control such as a user command without finding a remote controller of a legacy device every time to manually control the legacy device for legacy devices without an IoT function. 레거시 기기를 IoT 제어할 수 있는 전자장치가 개시된다. 전자장치는 동작수행부와, 서버와 네트워크 통신을 수행하는 네트워크통신부와, 적외선통신부와, 소정 동작을 수행하도록 상기 동작수행부를 제어하고, 상기 적외선통신부를 통해 수신한 외부장치의 제1적외선신호로부터 상기 외부장치의 정보를 획득하고, 상기 서버에 상기 획득된 외부장치의 정보를 전송하여 상기 외부장치를 제어대상으로 등록할 것을 요청하고, 상기 서버로부터 상기 외부장치의 제어 명령을 수신하고, 상기 외부장치가 상기 수신된 제어명령에 대응하는 동작을 수행하게 하는 명령정보를 포함하는 제2적외선신호를 송신하도록 상기 적외선통신부를 제어하는 프로세서를 포함한다. 이에 의하여, IoT 기능이 없는 레거시 기기들에 대해서 사용자가 매번 레거시 기기의 리모컨을 찾아 수동으로 제어하지 않고 사용자명령과 같은 IoT 제어할 수 있다.
