Abstract The present invention relates to a smart key system for vehicles for protecting a relay station attack (RSA), and to an operating method thereof. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the smart key system for vehicles for protecting an RSA comprises: a smart key control device for transmitting an LF command signal for performing a passive function if a command to start the passive function of a vehicle is input, receiving an RF response signal corresponding to the LF command signal, analyzing the received RF response signal to determine the possibility of an RSA, and performing an operation for the passive function or an operation of outputting an RSA warning message; and a smart key device for transmitting the RF response signal including data about a distance from the vehicle in response to the LF command signal transmitted from the smart key control device, and selectively including RSA warning data in the RF response signal by using an RSSI value of the LF command signal. 본 발명은 Relay Station Attack 방어를 위한 차량용 스마트키 시스템 및 그 동작방법에 관한 것으로서, 본 발명의 실시예에 따른 Relay Station Attack 방어를 위한 차량용 스마트키 시스템은 차량의 Passive 기능의 시작 명령을 입력받으면, 상기 Passive 기능을 수행하기 위한 LF 명령 신호를 송신하고, 그에 대응하는 RF 응답 신호를 수신하며, 수신된 상기 RF 응답 신호를 분석하여 Relay Station Attack (RSA) 가능성 여부를 판단하고, 상기 Passive 기능에 대한 동작을 수행하거나, RSA 경고 메시지를 출력하는 동작을 수행하는 스마트키 제어장치, 및 상기 스마트키 제어장치에서 송출된 상기 LF 명령 신호에 대응하여 상기 차량과의 거리 데이터를 포함하는 상기 RF 응답 신호를 송출하되, 상기 LF 명령 신호의 RSSI값을 이용하여 상기 RF 응답 신호에 RSA 경고 데이터를 선택적으로 포함시키는 스마트키 장치를 포함한다.
