The present invention relates to an active front wheel steering apparatus for a vehicle and an initialization method thereof, which can perform an initialization operation to match the output angle of a pinion unit with the steering angle of a column unit in case of steering or assistant steering of a driver for the driver not to recognize it. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the active front wheel steering apparatus comprises: a column unit for surrounding a steering axle connected to a steering wheel of the vehicle; and a pinion unit for converting the rotational movement of the steering axle into a straight movement of a rack bar. The apparatus comprises: a first detecting unit for detecting the speed of the vehicle; a second detecting unit for detecting the steering angle of the column unit by the rotation of the steering axle; a third detecting unit for detecting the output angle of the pinion unit; and an electronic control unit which controls the output angle of the pinion unit to match the steering angle of the column unit when a preset initialization operation condition is satisfied while the initialization operation is conducted to match the steering angle of the column unit and the output angle of the pinion unit. 본 발명은 운전자가 인식하지 못하도록 운전자의 조타 또는 보타시 컬럼부의 조향각에 피니언부의 출력각을 맞추는 초기화동작을 수행할 수 있도록 한 능동 전륜 조향 장치 및 그의 초기화 방법에 관한 것이다. 본 발명의 일 실시예에 따르면, 차량의 조향휠에 연결되는 조향축을 둘러싸는 컬럼부와, 상기 조향축의 회전운동을 랙바의 직선 운동으로 변환하는 피니언부를 포함하는 능동 전륜 조향 장치에 있어서, 상기 차량의 속도를 감지하는 제 1 감지부; 상기 조향축의 회전에 의한 상기 컬럼부의 조향각을 감지하는 제 2 감지부; 상기 피니언부의 출력각을 감지하는 제 3 감지부; 및 상기 컬럼부의 조향각과 상기 피니언부의 출력각을 일치시키는 초기화동작을 수행할때 미리 설정된 초기화동작조건을 만족하는 경우 상기 컬럼부의 조향각에 맞춰지도록 상기 피니언부의 출력각을 조절하는 전자제어유닛을 포함하는 것을 특징으로 하는 능동 전륜 조향 장치가 제공된다.
