Summary: | The present invention relates to hydrolysis of β-O-4 (phenethyl phenyl ether) which is a typical bond in a lignin structure using a solid basic catalyst in near-critical water and more specifically, to a process for producing a low molecular weight aromatic compound by using Na_ZrO2 which is a solid basic catalyst in near-critical water as a heterogeneous catalyst. The process developed by the present invention can obtain styrene and phenol with high yield in near-critical water by using Na_ZrO, a solid basic catalyst. The yield is higher than conventional processes using an acid catalyst in an organic solvent, and the activity of the product is higher than that of a product formed by using alkali salt (NaOH) which is a homogenous basic catalyst, thereby being useful for the selective production of a specific aromatic compound.
