Abstract An image forming apparatus and a color conversion method for outputting color gamut distribution character and performing color transformation by using the classified area matrix are provided to transform digital data into LAB color coordinate by using color transformation matrix corresponding to the determined part color gamut after determining color gamut on a LAB-Plane when transforming digital data into CIELAB color coordinate. A scanning part(210) scans image and outputs to a plurality of digital color coordinates. A determining unit(220) determines a part color gamut belonging to the digital color gamut of standard color gamut based on a plurality of digital color coordinates and a reference matrix calculated on a standard color gamut. A matrix selecting unit(240) selects the color transformation matrix corresponding to the determined part color gamut of color transformation matrixes especially calculated by a plurality of part color gamut. An output unit calculates the LAB color coordinate based on the selected color transformation matrix and digital color coordinate.
