Abstract An optical information device comprises an optical pickup head which applies a light beam to an optical storage medium, receives a light beam reflected from the optical storage medium, and outputs a signal in accordance with the light received, a jitter measuring section for measuring jitter for the signal outputted from the pickup head, and a judging section for judging from the jitter measured above whether the optical storage medium is acceptable or defective. The jitter measuring section measures the jitter about a row of marks or spaces having a length of 3T or more where T is the basic period and recorded on the optical storage medium where digital information is recorded as a row of marks or spaces having a length of kT where k is an integer of 2 or more and T is the basic period.
