Abstract A method of subdividing and decelerating hot rolled long products are provided to decelerate the products highly effectively without deforming the products or damaging their surfaces by applying pinch rolls and alternately arranged rolls such that the rolls are harmonized with the products. As a method of subdividing and decelerating a hot rolled long product advancing along a delivery path(Pd) from a rolling mill to a cooling bed(10), the method comprises the steps of: arranging a decelerator(14) and a shear(12) continuously along the delivery path, wherein the decelerator includes a set of driven pinch rolls installed in front of a plurality of deflector rolls; contacting a front segment of the product with the pinch rolls operating at an initial speed that is at least the same as that of the advancing product; operating the shear to separate the front segment from the rest of the product; and decelerating the front segment by the steps of reducing the speed of the pinch rolls, and operating the deflector rolls to deflect the product segment from the delivery path into a sinuous path.
