Abstract An aqueous coating composition is provided to realize excellent shelf stability, energy efficiency and workability, to form a multi-layer coating film having excellent appearance and water resistance. An aqueous coating composition is used as a second aqueous coating agent for forming a multi-layer coating film through a wet-on-wet coating process including coating a first aqueous coating agent, a second aqueous coating agent and a clear coating agent, successively. The aqueous coating composition comprises, based on 100 parts by weight of the resin (on the solid content basis): (a) 40-60 parts by weight of an emulsion resin obtained by emulsion-polymerizing a monomer mixture containing 0.5-10 parts by weight of a multifunctional vinyl monomer based on the weight of the total monomers, a carboxyl-containing vinyl monomer, a hydroxyl-containing vinyl monomer, and another polymerizable vinyl monomer; (b) 1-5 parts by weight of an amide group-containing water-soluble acrylic resin; (c) 5-20 parts by weight of an urethane emulsion; and (d) 15-35 parts by weight of a curing agent.
