Abstract PURPOSE: An interworking method and apparatus between an IPv4(Internet Protocol version4) network and an IPv6(Internet Protocol version6) network are provided to enhance processing rate of a packet and performance by suitably disposing an NAT(Network Address Translation)-PT(Protocol Translation) performing unit according to the scale of a network. CONSTITUTION: An IPv6 packet is received(S710), and a current packet processing state of an NAT-PT performing unit is received(S720). If the current packet processing state is not smaller than a pre-set threshold value(S730), information that the IPv6 packet cannot be processed anymore is transferred to an IPv6 node(S740). If the current packet processing state is smaller than the threshold value(S730), an IPv4 address mapped to the address of the IPv6 node is read from an IPv4 address pool(S750). A header of the received IPv6 packet is converted into an IPv4 header(S760) and the packet received from the IPv6 node is sent to an IPv4 node(S770).
