Abstract | PURPOSE: Novel inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are provided which is useful for the prevention, control and treatment of diseases in which the proteolytic action of MMPs are involved. CONSTITUTION: Succinic amide derivatives of formula (I), wherein W is a -CO2H or-CONHOH group; R, R1 and R2 are each hydrogen or an organic residue, R3 is the residue of an alpha-amino acid and R4 is an organic group, are inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and inhibit the release of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF) from cells. Therefore the derivatives are useful for the prevention, control and treatment of diseases in which MMPs or TNF are involved.
