Abstract | The present invention relates to a composition for preventing, alleviating or treating liver disease, and a health functional food for alleviating liver damage, containing an Allium hookeri extract as an active ingredient. When applied to animal models with liver toxicity, the Allium hookeri extract according to the present invention significantly decreases aspartate aminotransferase (ALT) and alanine aminotransferase (AST) values, which are widely known as liver damage indicators, and increases the expression of an anti-oxidizing enzyme such as catalase and glutathione peroxidase, thereby effectively protecting the liver form oxidative stress caused by liver damage. Therefore, the composition containing the extract as an active ingredient, according to the present invention, can be usefully used in preventing, alleviating or treating liver damage. Particularly, the Allium hookeri extract is an edible medicinal plant, so the composition containing the extract as an active ingredient can be taken safely for a long period of time. |
