Abstract PURPOSE:To detect torque without making a device complex nor requiring high fitting accuracy by forming a torsion generation part at a necessary part of a rotary shaft and arranging a piezoelectric element between installation surfaces provided on its input and output sides. CONSTITUTION:A small-diameter part with specific length is formed at the necessary part of the rotary shaft 1 and this is used as the torsion generation part 2. A screw 3 is provided on the input side of the torsion generation part 2 and a cylindrical sleeve 4 is engaged threadably with it. The end surface of the sleeve 4 is ground orthogonally with the shaft to form an installation surface 7. An installation collar 8 which has its internal surface as an installation surface 9 opposite the installation surface 7 is provided on the output side of the torsion generation part 2. The piezoelectric element 10 is arranged between the installation surfaces 7 and 9 and pinched by screwing the sleeve 4. Then the torsion generation part 2 generates proportional inertial moment by variation in torque applied to the input shaft and the piezoelectric element 10 generates shearing stress. Consequently, the output voltage signal of the piezoelectric element 10 is led out by a contactor 18 through a slip ring 13 and outputted as torque by a detecting circuit 16.
