PURPOSE:To efficiently filter raw water having suspended matter by efficiently circulating and transferring a waste filter medium, agitating and cleaning the waste filter medium during circulation to obtain a clean filter medium, and supplying the clean medium to a filtration vessel. CONSTITUTION:The raw water having suspended matter is supplied into the filtration vessel 1 from the bottom of the vessel 1, the suspended matter is collected by sand A as the granular filter medium, and the filtered water is discharged to the outside from the top of the vessel 1. Meanwhile, the waste filter medium deposited with the suspended matter is settled at the bottom of the vessel 1, and flows down into a circulating pipe 6 from an opening 3. Treated water is discharged by a pump 8 from a first branch pipe 7a at the first bend 6d of the pipe 6, air is injected by an air compressor 11 from a second branch pipe 7b at a second bend 6d, hence the waste filter medium is horizontally transferred, then lifted up in the pipe 6, agitated and cleaned by the mixed air and treated water, and returned into the vessel 1 from the top of the vessel 1.
