Abstract PURPOSE:To permit the occlusion and release of gas and the activation of a metal evenly by placing a basket packed with a gas-occluding metal on horizontal plate coils provided at equal intervals on the periphery of a heat exchange duct. CONSTITUTION:The basket packed with a specific metal is supported by the semicircular plate coils 10a and 10b provided at equal intervals on the periphery of the heat exchange duct 5 of a flat section, dividing the cylindrical container 1 into two sections. When gas is occluded, hydrogen is introduced through the gas entrance pipe 15 while passing a coolant medium through the heat exchange duct 5 and the plate coils 10a and 10b to fill it into the basket 14 through the apertures 16 and 17, where it is reacted with the metal to form a metal hydride. When gas is released, a heating medium is passed through the heat exchange duct 5 and the plate coils 10a and 10b to raise it to a given discharge temperature, whereupon the metal hydride is decomposed to form hydrogen which is, in turn, discharged through the gas entrance pipe 15.
