Summary:PURPOSE:To form a dense surface layer having superior adhesion to an iron alloy material as a base material by forming a nitride layer consisting of Fe and N on the surface of the iron alloy material and by diffusing Mo and/or W at a prescribed temp. with a prescribed treating agent. CONSTITUTION:A treating agent consisting of one or more kinds of compounds such as halides, oxides or nitrates of alkali metals or alkaline earth metals and/or an ammonium halide or a metallic halide is prepd. A nitride layer consisting of Fe and N or Fe, C and N is formed on the surface of an iron alloy material and the nitrided iron alloy material is treated at <=700 deg.C together with Mo and/or W and the treating agent to form a nitride or carbonitride layer contg. Mo and/or W on the surface of the iron alloy material.
