Abstract PURPOSE:To provide a casting mold which yields a thin billet having a good surface condition without buckling a solidified shell by specifying the space between the inside surfaces, in the transverse direction of the billet, of the mold from the position where the solidfied shell is formed to the part for profiling the sectional shape of the intended thin billet and the peripheral length of the inside surface of the mold. CONSTITUTION:The downward drawing mold of, or example, a moving belt type is formed of a pair of short piece parts 1a facing each other and similar long side parts, i.e., moving belts 2a. The position slightly below the top end of the parts 1a is the meniscus part of the molten metal poured into the mold. Said position is substantially the same as the position (designated as A) where the formation of the solidified shell starts. The part near the bottom end of the parts 1a corresponds to the part (designated as B) profiling the sectional shape of the thin walled billet to be obtained finally. The inside surfaces of the molds from the position A to the part B are gradually reduced or expanded in the space between the inside surfaces in the thickness and width direction of the billet toward the drawing direction of the billet. The peripheral length of the inside surface of the mold within the plane intersecting with the billet drawing direction from the position A to the part B is maintained at the size of 0.7- 1.1 times that of the position A as standard.
