Abstract PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound by reacting a primary or secondary long-chain aliphatic amine with formaldehyde and H2 in the presence of an Ni-based hydrogenation catalyst using a specific amount of hydrated salt or anhydrous salt of orthophosphoric acid, pyrophosphoric acid or tripolyphosphoric acid as a cocatalyst. CONSTITUTION:The objective compound can be produced in high yield, by the N,N-dimethylation or N-methylation of a primary or secondary long-chain aliphatic amine with formaldehyde and hydrogen in the presence of an Ni-based hydrogenation catalyst, using 0.01-5pts.wt. (based on 100pts.wt. of the amine) of a cocatalyst comprising a hydrated salt or anhydrous salt of orthophosphoric acid, pyrophosphoric acid or tripolyphosphoric acid of formula I or formula II (n is 1-3; when n is 1, m is 1-3; X is alkali metal or ammonium salt when n=1 and m=1, is alkaline earth metal when n=1 and m=2, and is Al when n=1 and m=3; when n is 2, then m is 1 and X is alkali metal, ammonium salt or alkaline earth metal; when n is 3, then m is 1 and X is Al).
