Summary:PURPOSE:To eliminate the need for storage of item numbers for a user by comparing the retrieval data with the storage data from upper digits and every digit and limiting gradually a candidate for retrieval of data. CONSTITUTION:For instance, the Mr. TANAKA's private telephone number ''TANAKA 045-954-4910'' is retrieved at the area of item No.I5. For retrieval, the data T on an upper digit D1 is fed through a keyboard 1. In this case, mark digits M1-Mn are all candidates of retrieval and therefore set at ''1'' respectively. As a result of comparison, the digit D1 sets the mark digits M at ''0'' excepting for digits M1 and M5. Then A of the data D2 of the next digit is supplied, and the M1 and M5 are set at ''0'' and ''1'' respectively as a result of comparison. Therefore it is judged that the item I5 is equal to a desired item. Then the contents of the item I5 are displayed to a display element 2.
