Summary:PURPOSE:To improve the specific fuel consumption of a diesel engine, by improving the combustion pattern by providing an air injection means having air chambers, storing therein compressed air when pressure in a combustion chamber is raised, and injecting the compressed air into the combustion chamber at the latter half of combustion stroke. CONSTITUTION:When pressure in a combustion chamber is raised, pressure of gas in an upper and a lower air chambers 11A, 11B is also raised and a driving piston 10 is pushed upward by the force acted the pressure receiving area having a diameter (d). When the force pushing the piston 10 upward exceeds the biasing force of a spring mechanism 9, the entire sectional area of the piston 10 serves as the pressure receiving area, so that the piston 10 is lifted rapidly. Simultaneously with the above, an air- chamber piston 12 is also moved upward. Resultantly, air in the upper air chamber 11A is discharged into a combustion chamber 5 via a gas passage 6 and agitates gas in the combustion chamber 5, so that combustion is promoted. On the other hand, air is introduced into the lower air chamber 11B via a passage 7. Subsequently, when the pressure of gas in the combustion chamber 5 is lowered, the two pistons 10, 12 are returned to their original positions by the spring mechanism 9. Thus, since fuel is burnt in a short while and combustion pattern is improved, the specific fuel consumption of an engine can be lowered.
