Summary:PURPOSE:To manufacture a porous glass membrane having excellent heat resistance, chemical resistance and mechanical strength and controlled pore diameter, by depositing fine glass particles to a substrate heated above the sintering temperature of the glass particle and below the temperature to form transparent glass. CONSTITUTION:The torch 3 for the synthesis of fine glass paticles is transferred linearly with the torch transfer device 6 relative to the surface of the carbon substrate 1. An inert gas is introduced into the reaction vessel 9 through the inert gas inlet 10 attached to the bottom part of the vessel to prevent the oxidation of the carbon substrate 1. When SiCl4 vapor carried with Ar gas is introduced to the torch 3 keeping the above conditions, fine SiO2 particles are produced by the flame hydrolysis reaction in the oxyhydrogen flame. The produced fine SiO2 particles 4 are deposited to the surface of the substrate 1, and at the same time, sintered according to the temperature of the substrate 1 to form a porous glass membrane 5 composed of fine SiO2 particles sintered with each other in the form of chains. The substrate 1 for the deposition of the fine SiO2 particles is heated above the sintering temperature of the particles 4 and below the temperature to form transparent glass.
