Summary:PURPOSE:To prevent a failure in suction by repeating a sucking operation on detecting that a sheet document is not sucked, and keeping a fixed range of distance between the uppermost sheet document and the next sheet document to let air flow therebetween. CONSTITUTION:On starting the feed of a sheet document a paper feed table plate 40 is lifted up in the direction of an arrow C to a position where the uppermost sheet document 39' pushes up the base of a sucking portion 5 and a pressure roller 16 to some degree, so that the forward end of the base of the sucking portion 5 and the upper surface of the leading end of the sheet 39' are opposed to each other at a distance delta. In such a condition, air is sucked from an air suction hole 6 disposed on the base of the sucking portion 5. The distance delta is kept within a fixed range by a flexible duct 3. Subsequently, the whole unit is gradually accelerated and rotated in the direction of an arrow E to let air flow easily between the uppermost sheet 39' and the following sheet, so that the sheets can be easily separated.
