Summary:PURPOSE:To form a small-sized serial printer capable of multisymbol printing and bicolor printing by enabling selective shifting of two carriages disposed on one guide shaft (type wheel shaft). CONSTITUTION:A first carriage 21 provided with a type wheel 23 for right-hand numerical symbols and a type wheel 24 for function symbols and a second carriage 37 provided with a type wheel 39 for left-hand numerical symbols are arranged on a guide shaft 1. First and second screw bodies 22 and 38 connected on a shift shaft 17 with a spline shaft are arranged on the carriages 21 and 37 respectively. In the above-mentioned equipment, a rack 20 is positioned on the right side of a rack shaft 19 and engages a gear section 22a of the first screw body 22 to shift the first carriage to the left and then, a printing is performed with type wheels 23 and 24. On the other hand, the rack 20 is positioned on the left side thereof and engages a gear section 38a of the second screw body 38 to shift the second carriage 37 and then, a different printing (e.g. different in color) is performed with a type wheel 39.
