Summary:PURPOSE:To prevent an accidental erroneous discharge, by arranging portions partially exposed to a gas discharging space adjoining the end cell demarcating regions of the outermost electrodes determining the discharge cells on both end parts of a shift channel. CONSTITUTION:Two groups of X side shift electrodes X1j, X2j and Y side shift electrodes Y1j, Y2j are formed on glass bases 5, 2 arranged oppositely interposing a gas discharging space 1, and their surfaces are covered with dielectric layers 6, 3 and surface layers 7, 4 made of MgO respectively. X side electrodes and Y side electrodes are opposed to each other in the relation of mutual offset by a half pitch, demarcate a shift discharge cell arrangement a1, b1... and constitute a shift channel 8. Then, parts 10, 11 partially exposed to the gas discharging space 1 are formed respectively on the outermost end electrodes 9, and y2n demarcating a write-in discharge cell W and a terminal shift discharge cell bn respectively. Thereby, the abnormal charge can be leaked quickly, and the erroneous discharge can be prevented.
