RUTHENIUM COMPLEX AND PRODUCTION OF ALCOHOL COMPOUND IN PRESENCE OF THE COMPLEX AS CATALYST

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the new compound useful as a catalyst for producing optically active alcohol compounds, etc., in high yields and in high selectivity. SOLUTION: A compound of the formula: RuXY(PR R R )n (NR R R )m [X and Y are each H or the like; R -R are each a (substituted) hydrocar...

Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the new compound useful as a catalyst for producing optically active alcohol compounds, etc., in high yields and in high selectivity. SOLUTION: A compound of the formula: RuXY(PR R R )n (NR R R )m [X and Y are each H or the like; R -R are each a (substituted) hydrocarbon; (m) and (n) are each 0-4; R -R are each H or the like], for example, cis-dihydride- cis-bis(triphenylphosphine)(ethylenediamine) ruthenium. The new compound is obtained, for example, by reacting a phosphine-ruthenium halide complex [for example, RuCl2 (PPh3 )3 (Ph is phenyl)] with an amine such as ethylenediamine in a solvent such as methylene dichloride preferably at -100 to 200 deg.C and subsequently hydrogenating the reaction product under a hydrogenation or hydrogen transfer type reduction reaction condition. The phosphine- ruthenium halide complex is obtained by reacting a ruthenium halide with a phosphine ligand.
