Abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanner which is superior in operability and capable of efficiently executing reading operation by adopting a configuration that a fault of relative movement is detected from a detection result of a position and a direction by the relative movement and automatic erasure of an image having already been written for an event detection time is instructed. SOLUTION: The fault of relative movement is detected from a detection result of a position and a direction through the relative movement and automatic erasure of an image having already been written is instructed for an event detection time. For example, for a name card scanner, a roller is rotated in response to a movement amount of a name card relatively moved along the surface of a transparent glass. An encoder 10 obtains the position of the image being read at present, based on a rotating direction and a rotating amount detected from the start of insertion up to the present time and provides an output of a detected position signal Sp to a CPU 11. The CPU 11 conducts automatic erasure of an image by the use of a moving state (moving direction or the like) of the name card on which the operation of the user is reflected.
