Summary: | PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject derivative suitable as a raw material for producing 2-cyano-biphenyls useful as an intermediate for medicines from a readily available raw material without forming a positional isomer as a by- product. SOLUTION: This 4-cyano-2-cyclohexene derivative of formula I (R is H or methyl), e.g. 4-cyano-5-(4'-methylphenyl)-1-cyclohexene. The compound of formula I is obtained by carrying out the Diels-Alder reaction of 1mol cinnamonitriles of formula II, e.g. 4-cinnamonitrile with preferably 2-5mol 1,3-butadiene, preferably at 180-250 deg.C for 10-25hr. The dehydrogenating reaction of the compound of formula I can further be conducted to afford 2-cyano-biphenyls of formula III by suppressing the formation of a positional isomer as much as possible. |
