Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a latex which is suitably used in high-speed coating and can give coated paper articles excellent in surface strength and surface uniformity by emulsion-polymerizing a specified monomer composition in the presence of α-methylstyrene dimer and purifying the product with diatomaceous earth. SOLUTION: A monomer composition comprising 15-75wt.% aliphatic conjugated diene monomer, 1-10wt.% ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer and 15-84wt.% other monomers copolymerizable therewith is emulsion- polymerized in the presence of 0.05-10 pts.wt., per 100 pts.wt. monomer, α- methylstyrene dimer to obtain a copolymer latex. The obtained copolymer latex is purified with 0.2-5 pts.wt., per 100 pts.wt. solid matter of the latex, diatomaceous earth to obtain a latex for paper coating. The obtained latex can give paper-coating compositions excellent in antifoaming properties, mechanical stability and flowability and suitably usable in high-speed coating.
