Summary:PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject compound containing both polyoxyalkyleneoxymethylene and cyclic acetal units in the molecule, high in linear orientation of the alkylene oxide, excellent in the adsorption to to-be- lubricated surface and lubricity, thus useful as e.g. a refrigerating machine oil. SOLUTION: This compound has e.g. a structure of formula I [R1 is H, a 1-21C (branched) alkyl (A), etc.; R2 is such that when R1 is H, it is a 3-21C branched alkyl, while, when R1 is A, it is A, etc.; R3 is H or a 1-8C (branched) alkyl; X is a 2-4C (branched) alkylene; k1 is 0-5; p1 is 0-2; m1 is 0 or 1; k1 , p1 and m1 satisfy the relationship: k1 +(m1 +2)p1 =5; a1 and b1 are each 0-20, satisfying the relationship: 0<(a1 k1 +b1 m1 p1 )<=20; the respective arrangements of k1 polyoxyalkyleneoxymethylene units and p1 cyclic acetal units may be random or block]. This compound is obtained by reaction between a compound of formula II and a compound of formula III to form a cyclic acetal which is, in turn, hydrogenated and then subjected to alkylene oxide addition, and, according as necessary, alkyl capping.
