Abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect the phase of a gear without depending on a worker's visual inspection. SOLUTION: Laser beams are applied from a laser sensor 76 while a gear where a detection mark is projected or recessed on a side surface is rotated, thus obtaining data waveform for expressing the time change of the amount of recessed and projection on the side surface of the gear. Height data corresponding to the height of the above detection mark and width data corresponding to the width of the above mark are extracted from data waveform obtained by filtering the above data waveform by a waveform processing part 26 and the height data and the width data are compared with a reference value by a CPU 29 and the waveform of the above detection mark is identified, thus detecting the position of the detection mark of the gear, namely the phase of the gear.
