Abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent the unequal drying of the exposed surface at the time of half submerged coating by subjecting a material to be coated to electrodeposition coating while bringing a coating liquid into contact with this material in a second stage of half submerging the material into an electrolyte in two-stage coating consisting of full submergence and half submergence of the material to be coated. SOLUTION: An electrodeposition vessel 2 is formed of a two-stage structure consisting of a deep section 20 and a shallow section 21. A car body 1 which is the material to be coated is subjected to electrodeposition coating while this car body 1 is moved from the deep section 20 to the shallow section 21. The car body 1 is fully submerged in the electrolyte 3 in the deep section 20 and the car body 1 is half submerged in the electrolyte 3 in the shallow section 21. The car body 1 is electrodeposition-coated in the deep section 20 and is electrodeposition-coated in the shallow section 21 as well. The car body 1 is electrodeposition-coated while the coating liquid contg. an electrodeposition coating material is ejected from a spraying device 22 toward the upper part and draft part 11 thereof in the shallow section 21. The coating flows downward while wetting the entire surface of the coated surface in the upper part of the car body 1. Waving arises at the liquid surface of the electrodeposition liquid 3 in the draft part 11 by the coating liquid ejected toward the draft part 11. As a result, the occurrence of the unequal drying is prevented and the occurrence of the destruction of the coating film in the draft part 11 is prevented.
